What kind of Lawn and How much will you need?

• Decide what kind of use your lawn has... will it need to be child and pet friendly, fast or slow growing, sun and shade tolerant etc. These features can help us recommend a turf variety bestsuited to your lifestyle needs.
• To measure how much turf you'll need, multiply the length and width of the area required to end up with a square metre figure. For irregular or oddly shaped areas break the area in measurable rectangles and triangles to help come up with the overall area.  Remember to allow for about 5% extra in your calculations for cutting-in around edges.
• Ground preparation is the key to a successful lawn installation. Ensure the area is completely weed and grass free. Leave the ground for 10 days after spraying before hoeing the area, taking time to remove stones and other debris prior to raking the ground smooth.
• Generally, a sandy loam soil mix provides the best base... Turfco recommends our own Turfgro Premium Lawn Foundation for your lawn base or else a blend of 40% river sand to 60% soil. Optimal soil depth is 100mm.
• Fertilise the ground prepared with a broad spectrum fertiliser such as Turfco's 'Aussie Lawn Tucker'.
• When laying turf yourself, best results are achieved by starting on a straight edge. Ensure the joins are tight with no overlap. You can stagger longer lawn strips to avoid a lengthy join line from forming in larger lawns. Trim around trees, garden beds and stones with a large knife or sharp spade. This will ensure clean edges around all your lawn contours.
• You can use a roller after lawn installation to smooth out small bumps and air pockets. This also assists the turf to form a good contact point with the soil base.
• A deep watering of new lawns will help roots establish quickly.
• Once established,watering can be reduced to regular cycles dependant on the turf variety.
